Transporting Animals

General rules

If you are planning to transport an animal, you shall inform UIA in advance.

animals

Transportation of animals is subject to governmental regulations concerning import, export and transit of live animals.

Passengers carrying animals must provide all necessary documents, such as:

  • export, import or transit permits;
  • health and vaccination certificates etc.

UIA cannot be held responsible if an animal is refused entry into or transit through a country.
Transportation of animals is allowed provided the passenger assumes full responsibility.
UIA shall transport the following live animals either in cabin or in hold:

  • small pets such as dogs and cats, and birds;
  • other small warm-blooded animals, such as guinea pigs, hamsters and rabbits;
  • assistance dogs accompanying passengers with a disability transported in the passenger cabin.

Domestic animals of unusual size or wild animals must be transported as cargo.
Animals must be accompanied by adult passengers when previously agreed with UIA.
Animals exceeding the maximum weight (including container) limit of 32kg (70 lb) shall be carried as cargo.

The total weight of pets in cabin with container is not included into the free baggage allowance.
Transportation of pets in cabin (except for service animals) is always subject to payment of excess baggage charges.

Pets in cabin

Animals must be clean and healthy, kept in a soft-sided leak- and smell-proof container (soft bags and baskets designed for transportation of small dogs and cats in cabin are acceptable).

Maximum weight of an animal together with the container: 5kg.
Size of the container: the total sum of 3 linear dimensions may not exceed 115cm.
The container must be held by the passenger or fit under the seat in front. It may not be placed on the seat.
UIA may refuse to carry an animal if the above requirements are not met.

We only allow one container per passenger on a given flight. However, 2 or more animals are allowed in the same container if they are familiar with each other, provided the weight of the container and the animals does not exceed 5kg.

Service animals

A service animal is a seeing-eye, hearing or assistance dog accompanying passengers with disability.
It can be taken into the aircraft cabin free of charge regardless of the weight and size as long as it wears a harness and a muzzle.
The carriage of service animals must be agreed with UIA in advance.
All documents confirming that a service dog is trained for accompanying a passenger with disability who is dependent upon it, must be presented upon request to a UIA representative.

Animals in hold

Animals must be clean and healthy. Animal's containers shall be:

  • large enough that the animal can stand upright, turn and lie down in a natural manner;
  • clean, leak- escape- and claw-proof;
  • fit for transportation and handling (feeding, watering, cleaning);
  • well ventilated on at least three sides.

Hand-made containers are not acceptable for transportation of animals in hold.
A maximum of two animals of comparable size of up to 14kg each that are used to each other may be shipped in the same container.

Animals over that weight must travel individually in separate containers.
A passenger pet owner must provide enough food and water for the duration of the flight.
UIA may refuse to carry animals if the above requirements are not met.
